Primetime

From the trailers, this looked like a slam dunk, a compelling concept with one of the best character actors of the past few years. However, in terms of being a good movie it fell a bit flat for me. The first third was completely disorienting, with so many cuts between locations and time skips; it was difficult to get grounded in the story that was being told. We basically raced through all of the establishing background, lingered for a few moments on the story of Dan, and then rocketed straight into Hansen chasing "the whale". The performances from Robert Pattinson, Merritt Wever, and Skyler Gisondo were all excellent, but it's unsurprising that this is the narrative debut for director Lance Oppenheim.

Overall it's totally fine, and I do think worth a watch for the performances and distinct visual identity, but I wish it had been a little more focused on telling a story rather than just giving you a series of disjointed scenes.
