Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma
AMC Southdale 16 | Aud. E5 | Seat 13
A friend of mine in Australia got to see this well before the United State theatrical release, and messaged me "THAT WAS AMAZING" after seeing this. I, on the other hand, sent them a voice message after I saw it which simply said (after a pause for dramatic effect): "What the fuck did I just watch?"
In the immediate aftermath of the film, I was even more confused than I was after watching I Saw the TV Glow. It wasn't until I learned that the French word for orgasm literally translates to "Little Death" that I began to somewhat feel like I understood the film. But, at the end of the day, I don't even think there's much to understand. Which is totally fine! It was a fun movie! But there were so many choices that felt so specific yet inscrutable that I don't think I got out of the film what was intended. For example, during the scene where we see the original Camp Miasma film, one of the characters pulls out a handheld camcorder with a flip out LCD display that has "HD" on the outside, despite the film taking place in the early '80's. And what's with the continued focus on candy?
Anyway, great movie, really enjoyed it, but don't think I "understood" it.
